Basic crumble topping

Thursday October 22, 2020 - by

Making your own basic crumble topping is very simple. My recipe proves it really is. Usually crumble is made with flour, sugar and butter, but you can add more to spice it up. Nuts and seeds and any sort of fruits. Or spices such as cinnamon and ginger. My homemade crumble is slightly healthier, because I add wholemeal flour, oat flakes and palm sugar. Whole grains and using as little sugar as possible is always the best. I also added walnuts, cookie spice mix and plant-based butter. That makes my crumble recipe totally vegan. Don’t be distracted when baking the crumble, because before you know it will burn. No time for all kinds of househould chores in between this time, okay.

How to combine basic crumble?

Who doesn’t like a crunchy layer of crumble? It is actually a great addition to so many recipes and also super delicious to snack. You can use pieces of nuts and seeds and spices of your choice. Combine your crumble whith your dessert or breakfast, for example. Sprinkle it over your yogurt or smoothie as we often do. It gives your dish that desired crunchyness. And what about the combination with stewed pears, sounds tasty right? Another option is to sprinkle the unbaked crumbs over your cakes and all sorts of fruits before you bake it in the oven. Everyone is familiar with apple crumble, a dish with apple and crumbly dough. It just tastes like heaven and it’s totally not complicated to prepare.

Palm sugar in crumble recipe

When you add sugar to your cakes and pies, you can often use palm sugar instead. In my basic crumble recipe I also add palm sugar. Obviously, always add as little sugar as possible in your meals. Too much sugar is never healthy. However, if you add some, choose for palm sugar. It’s healthier than ‘normal’ sugar. We always buy Masarang at Ekoplaza, an organic supermarket in the Netherlands. With Masarang you support reforestation projects in Indonesia, read more about it on their website. Palm sugar is made from the Arenga palm and has a slightly caramel-like taste. It has been minimally processed without chemical additives, all natural which is great. Palm sugar has also a low glycemic index, contains antioxidants and slightly more vitamins and minerals compared to ‘normal’ sugar. When buying Masarang sugar, you support both the local people and the amazing nature in Indonesia.
